Embracing Technological Advancements
By Colin Chambers, Teacher of Computer Science at ACS Egham
As we look ahead to the next decade, the role of technology in education at ACS Egham is poised to evolve in transformative ways. With the integration of cutting-edge hardware technologies such as robotics, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and 3D printing, the educational experience is set to become more immersive, engaging, and interdisciplinary. While a wide range of technological advancements are reshaping education, here we focus on two key innovations that are already making a substantial impact at ACS Egham: VR and 3D printing.
Virtual Reality
Virtual reality is revolutionising the way students learn by offering immersive and interactive experiences. For example, students studying architecture can use VR to walk through their finished designs before they are built, helping them understand scale, structure, and spatial relationships. In science classes, VR can take students on virtual field trips to distant planets or inside the human body, offering perspectives that textbooks alone cannot provide.
3D Printing
Similarly, 3D printing empowers students to turn their ideas into tangible objects, fostering creativity and problem-solving skills. At ACS Egham, our six Bambu Lab 3D printers are faster and easier to use, making them more accessible for students. This shift has enabled learners to independently create prototypes and bring their designs to life, further enhancing hands-on learning across disciplines.
Our Grade 9 student, Kaan, designed and 3D printed a custom Funko Pop figure using Blender. This product was created as part of the merchandise for an eSports tournament, demonstrating his ability to combine creative design with technical skills in 3D modeling and printing.
This example represents just a small part of what we can expect to see in the future. As technology continues to advance, we can anticipate the introduction of even more innovative tools and resources that will further enhance the learning experience at ACS Egham. With the flexibility provided by the IB framework, all teachers are well-equipped to integrate these advancements into their curriculum, ensuring that students are prepared for a rapidly changing world. In future editions, we aim to continue to showcase innovative ways technology is being used to enhance learning and inspire our students to explore their potential in meaningful and creative ways.
